The Annual Appeal letter is one of the shortest pieces I write each year but it is the one that I worry about the most. It solicits critical funding for Depaul USA programs across the country. I worry if it will have its intended effect. In 2023, Depaul USA continued to respond to the needs of those experiencing homelessness in diverse, inventive, and love-inspired ways. Two new projects strung at opposite ends of the same great, winding river evince this.

In October, we opened Madeline House in Greenwood, Mississippi—the first transitional housing program for women leaving prison in the Mississippi Delta. We will help the women find employment, access health care and benefits, and become independent and productive citizens. Up in St. Louis, a joyful collaboration with the Vincentian family resulted in Depaul USA’s first housing program for refugees. St. Michael’s House is now a fully furnished, spacious, and light-filled home to Zina and Serhii Tkachenko and their children, Pasha and Mia. The Tkachenko’s fled Ukraine after the Russian invasion. Serhii is employed and Pasha is in school learning English. Zina has a beautiful home in which to care for 8-month-old Mia.

In cities across the country, my colleagues are striving to end homelessness in all its forms. As we enter the giving season, I ask that you consider a gift to support Depaul USA. We cannot do this work without you. For my part, as I close this short letter, I will heed the words of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton who told us to “Pray, hope and don’t worry.”

Wishing you abundant blessings,
